As some one who has a bit of an understanding of climate change and as some one who lives as immediate neighbour to a coal mine I have definite ideas on where coal mining should be heading.
Mines do not have to put the land back to how they found it
Any one can see this in the Acland area along the Oakey/Cooyar Road. One can also see the mining from the road
The promise of the towns growing was not true. In Acland as the whole town has gone (64 families)This has upset the social structure of those left on the fringe.
We have been kept awake by the noise and there are many health problems from the dust and diesel fumes.
The mines have greater financial pool to be able to take to court any neighbour who objects to anything they want to do
Eg we are in court as they want an 11 thousand head feedlot lot on our boundary which will sterilize three blocks on that end of our place. They have at least 50,000 acreas and they could put it some where else.
They are now taking the best farming land in Queensland
It is a pity that farmers are expected to actually produce more as the population grows.
Mines pollute , use great amounts of water and that is even before they actually cart or burn the coal
Much more to say but that is a start as one never kows if anyone is really listening
Dear Merilyn,
We have read about the happenings of Acland in the Newspapers. In our listening so far we have heard of this happening to a number of farmers in other areas.
We’d really like to chat to you when we get to Chinchila – will you be able to make it to the public meeting on the 28th?
We’re are really interested in taking lessons away from what has happened in Acland if you’d like to share.
Would you be interested in linking up with other farmers experiencing similar issues?
If you would like to contact us directly my email address is

Looking forward to meeting you.
